The Tate Modern is housed in an old power station on the banks of the River Thames in London. Bankside Power Station was redesigned as the Tate Modern by architects Herzog & de Meuron and opened in May 2000 to great public acclaim, attracting two million visitors in the first three months. It is the national gallery of international modern art, exhibiting art after 1900, with a wide ranging permanent collection, as well as frequent large exhibitions of major art movements and artists. There is a cafe and espresso bar as well as the Tate Modern Restaurant at the top of the building with fantastic views over the Millennium Bridge across the Thames and St Paul's Cathedral. Should you feel like taking in some pre-1900 art as well, you can catch the Tate boat down to the Tate Britain at Millbank.
