Stamford Street, SE1
This virtual tour was captured in Stamford Street SE1, looking towards the British Film Institute BFI London IMAX Cinema in Waterloo. The IMAX cinema is the round structure visible at the end of the road. It has the largest screen in Britain - 20 metres high (nearly five double-decker buses high!) and 26 metres wide. The site is at a busy intersection and above an underground line (just 4 metres underneath), but the architects and engineers took care to eliminate traffic and tube noise inside the IMAX cinema by siting the entire upper structure on anti-vibration bearings. The site had previously been home to the infamous 'bullring' - a network of tunnels which was home to over 200 homeless people for over 15 years, before they were evicted and rehoused to make way for the new development.
Just to the right of the IMAX, you can see the old Royal Waterloo Hospital for Children & Women. This was constructed in 1823, but then rebuilt in 1905 in red brick with terracotta. The hospital closed in 1936, and is now home to Schiller University. Also in the area you can view virtual tours of
Waterloo Station and
Gabriel's Wharf. Please click on the thumbnail panorama below to view the fullscreen virtual tour of Stamford Street.
