Even those not interested in medicine will know Alexander Fleming - but they may not know that it was here at St Mary's Hospital that he discovered penicillin in 1928. Heroin was also discovered here in 1874, although it only became widely used when Bayer in Germany started marketing it in 1898 as 'a non-addictive morphine substitute and cough suppressant'.
The hospital has seen the births of many celebrities and members of the British Royal family, including Elvis Costello, Kiefer Sutherland, Peter Phillips, Zara Phillips, Prince William and Prince Harry. Please click on the thumbnail panorama below to view the virtual tour at full screen size.
