Norfolk House, St James's Square

Loading map...
This virtual tour around St James's Square in London focuses on Norfolk House at 31 St James's Square. This is the second Norfolk House, and was built as office space in 1938. The original Norfolk House had a far longer history before it was demolished, but nevertheless the 'new' Norfolk House played an important role in World War II. The House because 'Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe' and the two plaques on the exterior of the building commemorate this vital role - the plaques are clearly visible in the virtual tour.

Designed in the Palladian style by Matthew Brettingham for the Duke of Norfolk, the original building was completed in 1722. Even Royals have been born and have lived here - Frederick, the Prince of Wales lived here between 1737-1741. His son, King George III was born here. Many great London houses were demolished in the 1920's and 1930's, but luckily the music room of Norfolk House was preserved and is exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Norfolk House is now the London headquarters of Pantheon Ventures, an investment management firm. Please click the thumbnail picture below to view the fast-loading, fullscreen virtual tour.
