Leadenhall Market

Loading map...
The buildings you can see in this Leadenhall Market virtual tour date from 1881, though there has been a market on this site since the 14th century. The market took its name from the manor house, which had a lead roof and a courtyard where provisions were sold and became known as Leadenhall Market. The market is now mostly retail space, but only 20 years ago it was still a bustling food market with poultry and game hanging from the hooks still visible outside the shop fronts. At Christmas, the area was lively with people rushing to collect their Christmas goose, as they had done for hundreds of years before.

We highly recommend visiting the market just to view the amazing, brightly coloured Victorian wrought iron and glass structure - try to drop in during the week, as there are market stalls selling fresh provisions from foie gras to stilton. Outside of market hours there's still a lively vibe to Leadenhall, with the Lamb Tavern, Chamberlains Restaurant, Ortega Tapas Bar and numerous other bars and eateries and plenty of shops.
