Gresham Street in the City of London is named after Thomas Gresham (c. 1519-21 November 1579). Gresham was a financial whizz-kid, and worked to assist King Edward VI. He also founded the Royal Exchange in the City. On his death he stipulated that after his wife died, he left a considerable sum of money to institute a college in the City of London. His intention was that seven professors should give lectures (one on each day of the week) in astronomy, geometry, physic, law, divinity, rhetoric and music. So in 1597 the very first higher learning institution was founded - Gresham College.

10 Gresham Street can be seen on the opposite side of the street - this development was completed in 2003 by eminent architects Foster + Partners.
