Some impressive statistics are that each year Great Ormond Street Hospital treats over 22,000 inpatients and 77,000 outpatients a year, they undertake 10,600 scheduled operations and 2,635 unscheduled operations and they have the widest range of children’s specialists under one roof in the UK.
Their determination to provide children with the best healthcare possible is always apparent. They have had some famous patrons to assist them in this cause. When Great Ormond Street Hospital opened in 1852, Charles Dickens wrote an article to publicise the hospital, and when it suffered its first financial crisis, he spoke at a dinner to help raise funds. The author, J.M. Barrie, signed the copyright of his work, Peter Pan, over to the hospital, so they could use the Peter Pan story to raise money for sick children long after his death. Diana, Princess of Wales was president of the hospital, again, helping to raise its' public profile.
