Crouch End

Loading map...
Crouch End is one of London’s ‘villages’, with an atmosphere and a crowd of its own. Named after a derivative of the word 'crux', meaning cross, as a wooden cross was once a main feature of the village. The working clock tower visible in the virtual tour is Crouch End’s centrepiece. It was built in 1895 by public subscription, as a mark of appreciation for Henry Reader Williams, who had campaigned to keep Highgate Woods out of the greedy hands of developers.

Seasoned Crouch Enders viewing the tour (which was captured in 2006) will notice 2 significant changes to the high street that took place at the end of 2008 - credit-crunch victims Woolworths and Myers have both closed down, leaving a large corner of Crouch End unoccupied. In the tours you can see both stores as they once were. Click the thumbnail below to view the virtual tour.
