In earlier years, Charlotte Street was very firmly established at the heart of bohemian London - most of which centred around a Charlotte Street pub, The Fitzroy - which gave its name to the area - Fitzrovia. Writers Dylan Thomas and George Orwell were regular customers here, as was occultist and writer, Aleister Crowley, artist Augustus John and sculptor Jacob Epstein. The most famous hangman in England, Albert Pierrepoint, allegedly drank here too. In this virtual tour, The Fitzroy can be seen on the corner of Windmill Street.
