Basinghall Avenue
Basinghall Avenue in the City of London was named after the Basings, a 13th century London family who lived locally. It is home to The Girdler's Company and Hall, one of the City Livery Companies. You can read more about livery companies in our blog. Between medieval times and about the sixteenth century, both men and women wore girdles - a type of belt. The Girdler's Company regulated this trade. In the 21st century, the Girdler's operate as a charitable foundation.
To the left of the Girdler's Hall, the large glazed building is One Basinghall Avenue, the new corporate headquarters of Standard Chartered.
