Alban Gate looks down over Wood Street, and the remains of the Christopher Wren-designed St Alban's Church, standing alone on an island in Wood Street. St Alban was the first British Christian martyr. The 1685 Wren church was in fact the 'new' St Alban, the previous Inigo Jones building having been destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666 - and it is said that a church has stood on this site since medieval times. The Wren St Alban Church was mostly destroyed during the Blitz in 1940, leaving only the tower remaining. This is now a Grade I listed building, used as offices for Ekhinos (a corporate finance firm) and is opposite Wood Street Police Station.
