Guildhall, The City of London

Guildhall bears the distinction of being the only non-religious stone building in the City of London that survived the Great Fire of London in 1666. Visitors to the Guildhall can feel just under 600 years of history around them. They can stand in the Great Hall knowing that they’re standing where Chopin gave his last concert, where Thomas Cranmer, Lady Jane Grey and one of the Gunpowder conspirators were tried, where Jack Cade led his rebellion in 1450. Shakespeare featured Cade’s rebellion in Henry VI, Part 2, and has Dick the Butcher make the first well known lawyer joke: “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.”

You can see the inside of the Guildhall during London Open House Weekend, which this year is on 19 & 20 September. In the meantime, you can see the exterior in this Guildhall virtual tour.
